ChexList ("we", "our", or "us") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal data. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our application.

1. Information We Collect

A. Account Information

We collect information you provide when creating an account:

Email address: Used for authentication and account recovery. Collected via Google Sign-In or email registration.
Profile information: Name and profile picture if provided through Google Sign-In.
Beta signup email: If you sign up for our beta program, we store your email to notify you about access.

B. User Content

The lists and items you create within the app are stored securely:

Lists: Names, descriptions, travel dates, and destination information.
Items: Item names, quantities, categories, subcategories, notes, and check status.
Shared lists: Email addresses of users you choose to share lists with.

C. Usage Data & Analytics

We use Firebase Analytics to collect anonymous usage data to improve our services:

Device type and operating system
App crash reports and performance data
Feature usage patterns (screens visited, actions taken)
Error logs for debugging purposes

2. Third-Party Services & Data Sharing

ChexList integrates with the following third-party services to provide its features. We do not sell your data.

A. Google Firebase

We use Google Firebase for core infrastructure:

Firebase Authentication: Secure sign-in via Google or email.
Cloud Firestore: Encrypted storage of your lists and user data.
Firebase Analytics: Anonymous usage statistics.
Firebase Hosting: Web app delivery.

B. Google Generative AI (Gemini)

Our AI-powered features use Google's Gemini model to provide intelligent suggestions:

Smart Add: Parses text you paste to extract items, categories, and quantities.
Smart Review: Analyzes your list and trip details to suggest missing items.

What data is sent to Gemini:

List name and description
Item names, categories, and quantities
Travel destination and dates (if provided)
Weather forecast data for your destination

Data handling: Your data is processed to generate suggestions and is not used to train Google's public AI models. We use Firebase AI with Google AI backend, which operates under Google's Gemini API data governance.

C. Open-Meteo Weather API

For travel lists with destinations, we fetch weather forecasts:

Data sent: Geographic coordinates (latitude/longitude) of your destination and travel dates.
Data received: Temperature forecasts and weather conditions.

Open-Meteo is a free, open-source weather API. No personal information is sent.

D. Firecrawl (Link Metadata)

When you paste URLs into the app, we may fetch metadata (title, description, image) to help you identify links:

Data sent: The URL you pasted.
Data received: Page title, description, and preview image.

This feature is optional. The URL content is processed to extract metadata but not persistently stored by our service.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

Provide, maintain, and improve our services
Authenticate your identity and secure your account
Sync your data across devices
Generate AI-powered suggestions for your lists
Display weather forecasts for travel destinations
Send technical notices, support messages, and beta program updates
Analyze usage patterns to improve the app
Fix bugs and troubleshoot issues

4. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored securely using Google Firebase infrastructure:

All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest.
Access to your data is protected by Firebase Security Rules.
We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal data.

5. Data Retention

We retain your personal information and content for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time.

6. Your Rights

You have the right to:

Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
Correction: Request correction of inaccurate data.
Deletion: Request deletion of your data and account.
Export: Export your lists and data.

7. Cookies and Tracking

We use essential cookies to maintain your session and provide core functionality. Firebase Analytics may use cookies or similar technologies to collect anonymous usage data. We do not use tracking for advertising purposes.

8. Children's Privacy

Our service is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we discover that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we will immediately delete this from our servers.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. For significant changes, we may also notify you via email or in-app notification.
